On the edge of Šolta's field at the intersection of the road connecting the two most distant places on the island, Stomorska and Maslinica, and leading to the port Rogač, village Grohote is situated.
The oldest and largest town on the island has always been just as it is nowadays the economic and administrative center of the island, although the locals were predominantly lime makers, farmers and fishermen. The way of life on the island through history is authentically presented in some scenes of the famous Croatian television series Velo misto, whose shooting was largely done in Grohote.
In the narrow streets of Grohote grew up some of the most famous Croatian painters such as Eugen Buktenica, Marin Kalajzić, Dinko Sule, and Vicko Buktenica.
